The Giant`s Causeway

The coast of Northern Ireland (Great Britain), 3 km from the city Bushmills, is covered with 40 thousand basaltic (more rarely andesite) columns. This place is called " The Giant`s Causeway" . The road, as well as the Causeway Coast, where it is located, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. Most columns are hexagonal, although some have four, five, seven and eight angles. The tallest column is about 12 meters high.
According to the scientific hypothesis, these quaint stone pillars were formed 50-60 million years ago, when, during the eruption of a volcano, hot and very liquid basalt lava broke through to the surface directly into the river. The outer layers of the lava quickly cooled under the influence of water and stone columns appeared, as if driven into the ground (this effect was achieved due to the mass of lava that pushed the river bottom underneath).
